    2022 Showed Cyber Crime Is Worsening

    Despite the majority of businesses understanding the importance of having good quality cyber security set up, online crime is continuing to get worse. Therefore, companies cannot afford to take their eye off the ball when it comes to protecting their data, customers, and reputation. 

    Cybersecurity expert Sean Sullivan recently spoke about the challenges experienced in 2022 in an interview with Security Boulevard. He noted that identity theft, hacking and phishing are becoming more common. 

    He noted that as everyone is constantly connected to the internet via their mobile phones, it is becoming easier for criminals to hack into accounts and steal important information. Companies that provide staff with mobile phones could be at greater risk, as these devices are more likely to be misplaced or stolen than laptops. Therefore, confidential data on cloud services could be accessed if the security is not tight enough. 

    Mr Sullivan added that cybercriminals are becoming savvier and can now use artificial intelligence for hacking and phishing.

    “Hackers have access to more devices than ever, allowing them to develop new ways of attacking systems,” he stated, advising that businesses invest in cybersecurity to reduce the risk of criminal activity. 

    According to the Office for National Statistics, fraud offences rose by a quarter and computer misuse increased by 89 per cent in the year leading to March 2020. During the 12-month period, there were 4.5 million offences of fraud and 1.6 million incidences of computer misuse in the UK. 

    It is not surprising then that Mr Sullivan has noticed cyber-attacks continue to increase in frequency, with the expert anticipating the severity of the crimes will worsen in the future.
